How is an Olivia Cruise like the Michigan Women’s Music Festival?

How is an Olivia Cruise like the Michigan Women’s Music Festival?

olivia photoI’ve been a faithful Festie goes for over 20 years. I’m in the process of planning an Olivia Cruise in the near future.  Researching information about Olivia got me noticing that the things people say about Olivia Cruises, are exactly like  things my friends and I have been saying about Michigan Womyn’s Music Festival for years. “Life altering”,” never want to leave”, “the call to go back year after year”, “I save up all year because it’s so important for me to go”, “I feel safe there”, are the way women describe these experiences.  Lets look at some of the common elements.

  1. Lesbians everywhere – You could camp at any state park or take a mainstream cruise and have a great time but how often and available are the opportunities to travel with thousands of lesbians all in one place. There are women everywhere you look — at every meal, at every dance, at every activity. One of the common comments about the experience of an all lesbian vacation is that everywhere you go, you’re acknowledged by others. You get the feeling that you’re all one very large group traveling together.
  2. Amazing entertainment – At Michfest as well as Olivia Cruises (did you know they started out as a record label?) the entertainment never stops. Where else could you see so many top name women entertainers perform all day and night and have it included in the price? From comedians to rock stars, country to pop, acoustic to punk, it’s all there waiting for you. Entertainers of MWMF and Olivia are there performing to a mostly lesbian audience, addressing us specifically and openly, is remarkably empowering.
  3. Michigan WomynRelationships – As a Festie goer and after talking to others who have done both Olivia and Michfest, I know it’s just about impossible to not meet new people. Some of the folks you meet, may become lifelong friends, others, you go back to reconnect with year after year. Sometimes you just find new friends to hang out with and never see again and once in a while magic happens and love blooms. My favorite story is about two women who were walking down a path at Michfest and came face to face and just looked at each other and knew. 20 years later, they’re still together. Olivia cruises offer solos programs staffed by Olivia Solos Coordinators, with a wide variety of activities. Whether it’s Michfest or Olivia, travelling alone is nothing to worry about.
  4. Plenty to do – Michfest and Olivia both offer a lot more than just entertainers. There’s dancing, workshops, seminars, movies, shared meals all included in the price. There is truly something for everyone. The only problem is trying to get in all the things you want to do.
  5. Welcoming & Empowering – One Olivia goer explained it like this; “It’s not being tolerated. It’s being embraced”. Even when you not on the ship or on “the land”, people in the towns and ports seem happy to welcome you. A local pub near the festival puts up a sign welcoming festie goers every year. Same thing on the cruises, I read that, at port in Curacao, the local lesbian group flung a large banner near the port that said Welcome Lesbians of Olivia!

Whether it’s a women’s festival or an Olivia Cruise, we should feel lucky that these venues have been around and are available to us. Women come from all over the world to share an experience that will forever change them.  Once you’ve been on the land or on a cruise, you can’t help but become an advocate, encouraging your friends who haven’t been, that they should go next time they get a chance.  Olivia, like Mishfest, has payment plans available.

They say the Michgan Womyn’s Music Festival is done, though I still hold out hope. An Olivia Cruise might be a fun alternative though.  Anyone up for a GOAL/Women Out and About Olivia Trip?  Here is the schedule!
