Roundabouts: Love Them or Hate Them, They are Here to Stay by Beth Bashert

| August 29, 2015

roundabout-benefitsYpsilanti Township is touting their new roundabouts as the first of the their kind, seems like a single lane rather than 2 lanes is the key difference. I am not just how unique that is, but what the heck — go for bragging rights!

Personally, I feel like I have the hang of them. Given the choice between a traffic light, or a series of them, I would take a roundabout. I drive a manual FJ Cruiser, so it reduces the amount of clutch work I have to do, but that is a minimal issue. Mostly, I just hate stopping.

I do find myself cursing at people who misunderstand the theory of them, and stop rather than yield into the traffic. I am clear on what and who I am cursing. People, not the roundabouts.

However, I hear a lot of complaining about roundabouts. Is this something that everyone loves to hate? What do you think about the roundabouts that have cropped up in the last few years? Do they help or hinder? Do you avoid, accept, or appreciate them?
